As of October 17, 2012 The Faraji Foundation is an official nonprofit corporation! We are so excited to share this news with all of you! What does this mean to you as Tuleeni supporters?

We will be saving on our overhead expenses by reducing the transaction fee for all donations. We are currently charged 7% through Global Exchange, and if you are one who prefers to donate online through Google, we are charged an additional 3%, resulting in a 10% loss of donations. Once we get our 501c3 status, we will receive all 100% of your donations! We do plan to look into using an online donation platform still, but this will result in only 2.9% transaction fee. Much better! This will also allow you to see how much of an impact your donation makes in real time.

We will still be running primarily as the Build Tuleeni A Home project, but we will have the ability to also dedicate (with donor approval) a small portion of our funds to go towards education fees, running Akili Daycare and Nursery School, and supporting Mama Faraji’s sustainability through pig pen workshops that she teaches to local women’s groups!

So, really, not much is changing but our name!

Please stay tuned and be on the look out for our transition into The Faraji Foundation!

We broke ground in March, and in August we completed the foundation for the first building! While we reached our goal for what was needed to complete the walls, we also decided it would be in everyone’s best interest to maximize our land use and build a two story building instead of the planned one story. It’s definitely going to be a struggle to raise the funds, but it’s going to be so much greater in the end to have a home for Tuleeni in which they won’t have to worry about growing out of any time soon! Thank you to every one who has donated, shared us on Facebook, or even just given us moral support! Please continue to support us in all we’re doing to help Mama Faraji and the Tuleeni Orphans.

GROUND BREAKING HAS BEGUN! We have a perimeter fence with a large access gate being installed this week!! We have dug our wells, measured the land for the first two buildings, land cleared for the buildings, and big trees uprooted for the first building!! We purchased a brick making machine a little while back, so that we can make our own interlocking bricks which will significantly reduce our material costs and will require much less mortar than regular bricks, and we already have a few thousand bricks made! We’ve purchased the majority of our building equipment, lots of cement, and 2 SIM tanks!

Co-founder Eric hosted a successful benefit concert for Tuleeni! This benefit concert took place at Club Lambi in Montreal on May 14, 2011. The event was sponsored by radio CJLO and CKUT and those performing included: Glass Passenger, Sunfields, Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few, as well as CJLO’s DJ Nana. These groups donated their time in support of Tuleeni Orphanage. Montreal’s own Sweet Revenge has also been a significant contributor and friend to the Help Build Tuleeni a Home project (www.mtlsweetrevenge.wordpress.com), as well as our photographer Ian David Bloom (www.flickr.com/photos/blumsy). We would like to thank everyone for coming out to support Tuleeni, as well as all of those who generously donated their time or products to the event. An extra HUGE THANK YOU to David Kunstatter, the lead singer and guitarist of Glass Passenger, for co-organizing this event for us! None of this would have been possible without your help! We really appreciate it!

Attention all: After MONTHS of negotiations and lost plots, we have just finalized the purchase of a BEAUTIFUL new plot of land in Uru, Tanzania. Uru is located about 15 minutes by car from Tuleeni’s current residency. The land is closer to Mt. Kili and therefore much cooler, and very fertile! The land is covered with banana trees and yam plants.

Uru is Mama Farji’s home town and home to several orphans’ family members. The new location will be great for the kids to establish relationships with distant family. The school systems are also great, as many of the children already attend school in and around Uru.

In addition to the land, Mama and her son George invested money to purchase a new Toyota van for the kids, and with a enough funds raised, we were able to pay the remainder of their fee!

Whats Next?

The bibi (owner) of the land has an additional plot of connecting land that she will sell to us in the future to give us a total of approximately 2.5 acres! We need to continue raising money so that we can purchase the second plot when it becomes available.

We also need to raise more money so that we can start the building process! While the purchase of land was difficult and stressful for everyone invested in our project, the building really is the hardest part! We will need to raise more money than most of us could ever imagine raising! For this we need your help more than ever right now!
